NEET – Importance of PHYSICS

NEET aspirants have to carefully plan their “Exam Preparation Strategy”. There will be 180 questions (Biology 90 + Physics 45 + Chemistry 45). Time given will be 180 minutes. As per the result of NEET UG 2019,General category aspirants need minimum 134 marks (50 percentile) while General-PH 45th and SC/OBC/ST requires 107 marks (40 percentile). Assuming 90% efficiency, then one needs to prepare for 148. Generally NEET aspirants pin their hopes in the order on Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

In any exam, an aspirant should have ease and comfort with at least 50% of topics. What it implies is that the student should have good grip on the subject and he/she should be extremely confident about the topics generally at micro level.

All NEET aspirants generally make their strategies around Biology which contains 90 questions. Assuming 90% efficiency, Biology would yield 81. It implies that remaining 67 have to be obtained from Physics and Chemistry. Here, generally NEET aspirants make their bets on Chemistry due to perceptional ease in Chemistry. In reality chemistry is also equally difficult. A Chem biased approach needs 2:1 ratio between Chemistry and Physics. Considering 2:1 ratio one needs to do get 44 from Chemistry. Assuming 90% efficiency, Chemistry could contribute 40. It implies reaming 27 when moderated to include 90% efficiency strategy, 30 should come from Physics.

All things being equal, Physics would become the biggest differentiator for success.

Physics preparation can be strategized based on numerical and non-numerical questions. Assuming 1: 3 for non-numerical to numerical questions in Physics paper. Roughly 12 questions will be non numerical questions. Therefore dreams of NEET ultimately depends on your ability to conquer the most dreaded 18 numerical problems in Physics.

This strategy so far assumes that one is extremely good in numerical chemistry. Chemistry paper would contain at least 10 numerical problems. One should not ignore the general difficulty level of various topics in Chemistry like Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Thus any weakness in Chemistry increases the performance pressure in Physics.

As a risk mitigation to any nonperformance in Biology and Chemistry, it is safe to set a target of 25 to 28 numerical problems in Physics for a successful NEET seat.

In actual MBBS course Physics has almost no weightage but in the qualifying entrance exam Physics would become the fate decider.
